Our Mission

The Strengths Journal is a collaboration among parents, scholars, and counselor practitioners. We know that often what challenges us about others is the flip side of their strengths. When we help children develop this self-awareness from an early age, they are more likely to make daily and life decisions that helps them be happier.

The Highlands Ability Battery is an objective standardized test that helps us get to know ourselves. Based on decades of abilities-research, it measures what we do well naturally, without a lot of effort. By taking this series of quizzes, we discover what tasks we find satisfying and which environments we find most comfortable. The Highlands also suggests that, in many cases, the flip side of our challenges is often our strengths. Getting to know our preferences, challenges and strengths in turn helps us make informed decisions which daily tasks and environments to surround ourselves with both in work settings, home, and in other life roles.

As counselors we know it is easy for kids (and many adults) to talk about what they wish they did differently or something they’d like to change about themselves. It is more difficult to describe what they do well, or even enjoy doing. Supporting youth to recognize, understand and apply their strengths to their lives develops self-awareness, which leads to self-confidence. Being aware of themselves and confident in their abilities is an asset that they can use in a variety of life situations over many years, including choosing their educational path their employment, their pastimes, friends, and, overall, cultivating a well-rounded life.
